How to clean stainless steel jewellery safely

A gentle routine for polished, brushed, black and gold-plated stainless steel pieces, what to avoid, and how to bring back the shine.

Black and silver-tone stainless steel band ring

To clean stainless steel jewellery, soak it for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse in clean water, and dry it completely with a soft cloth. That is enough for almost every piece. Avoid bleach, chlorine and abrasive pads, which can damage the surface, and use only soap and water on gold-plated or black-coated steel.

Why does stainless steel need cleaning?

Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a thin protective layer that resists rust. It does not tarnish like silver, but it collects skin oils, soap, lotion and dust, which make it look dull or cloudy. Regular cleaning removes this film and keeps the protective layer working.

How to clean stainless steel jewellery, step by step

  • Fill a small bowl with warm water and add a drop of mild dish soap.
  • Soak the jewellery for five to ten minutes.
  • Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, especially around links, clasps and engraving.
  • Rinse under clean running water (close the sink plug first).
  • Dry immediately and thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
  • Buff with a microfibre or polishing cloth for extra shine.

Cleaning brushed, black and plated steel

Brushed steel has fine lines; wipe and brush along the lines, not across them. Black and gold-plated steel (often PVD-coated) is durable but the coating can be scratched, so use only soap and water, a soft brush and a soft cloth — no polishing pastes. Steel set with stones or glued elements should not be soaked for long; clean it with a damp brush instead.

What should you never use on stainless steel?

  • Bleach and chlorine cleaners, which can pit and mark the surface.
  • Steel wool or scouring pads, which scratch.
  • Silver dips, which are designed for silver and can harm coatings and stones.
  • Toothpaste or baking soda on plated or polished mirror finishes.

How often should you clean it?

Wipe everyday pieces with a dry cloth after wearing and give them a soap-and-water clean every couple of weeks, or after swimming, the beach or heavy sweating. Store them dry and separately so harder stones and other metals do not scratch them.

Cleaning stainless steel watches and chains

For steel watch bracelets and chains, brush between the links where grime builds up. Check that a watch's water resistance allows rinsing before you wet it, and keep the crown closed. Leather or fabric straps should be removed or kept dry while you clean the steel parts.

Frequently asked questions

Can stainless steel jewellery get wet?

Yes, it handles water well, but dry it afterwards and rinse it after swimming in chlorine or salt water.

How do I make stainless steel jewellery shiny again?

Clean it with mild soap and water, dry it thoroughly and buff it with a microfibre or polishing cloth.

Why has my stainless steel ring changed colour?

Usually a film of soap or lotion, or wear on a plated or coated finish. Cleaning removes film; worn coatings cannot be restored at home.
