Chain construction

Cuban chain guide: widths, weight and how to wear one

Cuban chains use thick, interlocking oval links laid flat. Here is how width, length and construction change the look and feel.

A Cuban chain (also called a Cuban link or curb-style chain) is made of oval links that interlock and are twisted so they lie flat. Width sets the look: a few millimetres is subtle and everyday, while wide chains are bold statement pieces.

Width and the look

  • Around 3–5 mm: subtle; works alone or with a small pendant.
  • Around 6–9 mm: clearly visible; a confident everyday chain for many men.
  • 10 mm and above: bold statement; usually worn on its own.

These ranges are a guide, not rules. Your build, neckline and the rest of your jewellery all change how a width reads.

Length

For men, 50–55 cm (about 20–22 inches) commonly sits around the collarbone to just below it. Shorter lengths sit close to the base of the neck; longer lengths fall towards the chest. Measure a chain you already own if you are unsure.

Weight and construction

Two chains of the same width can weigh very differently. Solid links feel heavy and substantial; hollow links are lighter and cost less, but dent more easily. Ask for the weight in grams and whether the links are solid or hollow, especially for silver or gold chains.

Clasps

Wider Cuban chains often use a box clasp with a safety latch, which is secure and sits flush with the links. Thinner chains may use a lobster clasp. Check the clasp works smoothly before you wear it out.

How to wear one

  1. One wide chain is usually enough on its own.
  2. To layer, pair a wider Cuban with a thinner, slightly longer chain.
  3. With a pendant, choose a chain thin enough to pass through the bail.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Cuban chain the same as a curb chain?

They are closely related. “Cuban” usually describes thicker, tightly interlocked curb-style links.

Does a Cuban chain kink?

No. Its links move freely, so it does not kink the way a snake chain can.
