Leather bracelet care: how to clean, condition and store it

Keep leather bracelets and cuffs supple and smelling fresh: what water and sweat do to leather, how to clean and condition it, and how vegan leather differs.

Leather bracelet care is mostly about keeping it dry: take it off for showers, swimming and workouts, wipe it with a barely damp cloth when dirty, let it air-dry away from heat, and apply a small amount of leather conditioner every few months to keep it supple. Store it flat, out of sunlight, so it keeps its shape.

Why does leather need special care?

Leather is animal hide that has been tanned to make it durable and flexible. Water, sweat and heat pull out its natural oils, which makes it stiff, cracked and discoloured over time. Sweat can also make leather smell and darken where it touches skin. Gentle cleaning and occasional conditioning keep it supple.

How do you clean a leather bracelet?

  • Wipe the surface with a soft cloth that is only slightly damp.
  • For grime, use a tiny amount of leather cleaner or mild soap on the cloth, not on the leather.
  • Clean metal parts separately with a dry cloth to avoid wetting the leather.
  • Let it air-dry flat at room temperature, never on a heater or in the sun.

How do you condition leather?

Every few months, or when the leather looks dry, rub a pea-sized amount of leather conditioner into the bracelet with a soft cloth, wipe off the excess and let it rest for an hour. Test on a hidden area first, as conditioner can slightly darken some leathers. Avoid household oils, which can go rancid.

What if a leather bracelet gets wet?

Pat it dry with a towel, reshape it gently, and let it dry naturally away from heat. Once fully dry, apply a little conditioner to restore flexibility. Do not use a hairdryer; rapid drying cracks leather.

Storage and vegan leather

Store leather bracelets flat or loosely coiled in a breathable pouch, away from sunlight and damp. Vegan or PU leather does not need conditioning — wipe it with a damp cloth — but it can crack with age and heat, so keep it out of hot cars and direct sun.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with a leather bracelet?

No. Water stiffens and cracks leather and can rust metal parts. Take it off first.

How do I get the smell out of a leather bracelet?

Wipe it with a barely damp cloth and a little mild soap, let it air-dry fully, then condition it. Wearing it less during workouts prevents odours.

How long does a leather bracelet last?

With dry wear and occasional conditioning, a good leather bracelet can last many years.

Should I use oil on my leather bracelet?

No. Household oils can go rancid and darken leather. Use a small amount of proper leather conditioner instead.

Why has my leather bracelet gone stiff?

It has probably dried out from water, sweat or heat. Condition it with a small amount of leather conditioner and let it rest.
