How to fix a broken necklace clasp at home

Identify the clasp type, open and close jump rings safely, replace a broken clasp in minutes, and know when to visit a jeweller instead.

To fix a necklace clasp, first check whether the clasp itself is broken or just the small jump ring holding it. Use two flat-nose pliers to twist the jump ring open sideways — never pull it apart — slide off the old clasp, add a new one, and twist the ring closed until the ends meet flush. A replacement clasp and jump rings cost very little and the job takes about five minutes.

What type of clasp do you have?

  • Spring ring: a small round clasp with a tiny lever; common on fine chains.
  • Lobster clasp: a claw-shaped clasp with a lever; stronger and easier to use.
  • Toggle: a bar that passes through a ring; decorative and easy to fasten.
  • Magnetic clasp: two magnets that snap together; easy for stiff fingers.
  • Box clasp: a tab that clicks into a box; common on pearl and bead strands.

What do you need?

  • Two pairs of flat-nose or chain-nose pliers (small craft pliers work).
  • A replacement clasp in the same metal tone.
  • Two or three spare jump rings of a similar size.
  • A light-coloured towel to catch small parts.

How to fix a necklace clasp, step by step

  • Find the jump ring connecting the clasp to the chain.
  • Hold each side of the jump ring with a pair of pliers, with the opening at the top.
  • Twist one side towards you and the other away, opening the ring sideways.
  • Remove the broken clasp and hook the new clasp and the last chain link onto the ring.
  • Twist the ring back until the ends meet exactly, with no gap.
  • Gently tug the clasp to check it holds.

Why should you never pull a jump ring apart?

Pulling the ends outwards distorts the circle so it never closes properly and weakens the metal, leaving a gap that a fine chain can slip through. Twisting sideways keeps the ring round and lets it close neatly. If a jump ring has already been pulled out of shape, replace it with a new one.

When should you take it to a jeweller?

  • The chain itself has snapped in the middle and needs soldering.
  • The necklace is precious metal or an heirloom.
  • Beads or pearls are strung on wire with crimps or knotted silk.
  • The clasp is soldered directly to the chain with no jump ring.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fix a necklace clasp without pliers?

It is possible with your fingernails on soft, thin jump rings, but pliers give more control and are less likely to damage the ring.

Which clasp is the most secure?

Lobster clasps are generally more secure and easier to use than small spring rings.

What clasp is best for someone with arthritis?

Magnetic or large toggle clasps are easiest for people who struggle with small clasps.

Why does my necklace clasp keep opening?

Spring rings weaken with use, and jump rings with gaps let the clasp slip off. Replace worn spring rings with a lobster clasp and close every jump ring fully.
